Hershey had boughten tickets for him and Kitty for a cruise ship to Europe. Lucky for him he had to cancel due to business. This ship was the Titanic. Said to be indestructible the Titanic hit an unseen iceberg and later split in half and sunk on its way back to America. Luck didn’t last long for the Hershey’s though. While in Philadelphia Kitty was visiting with friends and became very ill. Milton came running, but sadly, Kitty died on March 25, 1915. In 1917, two years after Kitty’s death, America went into World War II. Hershey went to war with them. He told the government that he would provide free chocolate for every soldier’s ration pack. He was giving back to the country that had given him success. When America went through one of its biggest losses: The Great Depression, Hershey made a decision. He was not going to fire his employees into the loss of their homes and work. If they couldn’t stay working at the factory, he would find work for them elsewhere. This was when he ordered that several new buildings be put up. A sports arena for an ice hockey team, a grand hotel, and a humongous new community building was put in along with several others. As the years went on, Milton slowed down and eventually let the managers take over the company, and in 1930, donated his own house to the town. They used this donation as the town golf club. In fact, in 1941 Hershey hired who would go on to become one of the greatest golfers in the world. He hired Ben Hogan to work at the Hershey golf club. Just as Hershey rose to the biggest name in the chocolate, Hogan became the biggest name in golf. Hershey gave Hogan enough time to continue to play tournaments and hogan kept working even as he rose in the golf
