Growth is measured by how far a person comes from point A to point B in his or her life. Humans cannot grow without expanding their knowledge and straining their abilities, because that, in essence, is what makes a person grow. The effort put into a task, a conscious effort to be better at something makes a person grow. That is why Emerson's statement rings true. The fact that humans cannot reach the height of their potential without branching out, and cannot remain true to themselves if they do not reach for the stars proves Emerson's quotation. Humans are capable of so many great things, but without making an effort, they waste their capabilities. He is now incredibly successful with a wide variety of people following him for his content. This shows his growth as a person because he stopped doing engineering, something he was gifted at, to do something less certain. He became one of the most popular people in pop culture by taking a gamble, and risking his future on something he did not fully know how to do. This represents his growth because he went from being college dropout to pop celebrity in just under two years. If he had stuck to engineering, one of his "gifted" abilities, the Internet would be without a pleasant voice, entertaining commentary, and friend. He grew into a warm person who is more confident in himself because of the rallying support behind him, and took the opportunity to grow by reaching for something that no one else thought he could do. The most important part of society today is to remain true to yourself. This can only be done by growth, and pulling for something that no one else has. J.K. Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter series, remained true to herself and grew because of it. When she initially wrote her first book, numerous publishers rejected her. But she kept trying.
