Question 1: Explain the role of the stationary phase and the mobile phase in a chromatography experiment. How do they work together to produce a separation of the plated substances?
Answer: The stationary phase remains fixed in place while the mobile phase carries the components of the mixture through the medium in place.
Because of the differences in factors, such as the solubility of certain components in the mobile phase and the strength of their affinities for the stationary phase, some components will move faster than others, facilitating the separation of components within the mixture.
Question 2: Which food coloring dye did you predict to be the most polar based on the structures? Based on the TLC plate, which food coloring dye was the most polar? Explain your reasoning. …show more content…
After he tested it, blue barely broke up into two colors, whereas the others easily broke into two colors. Blue is also the most polar because it has the most electronegative oxygen end. On the TLC plate, blue barely moved compared to the other colors. The blue stuck towards the bottom, so it is most polar, so the more it moves up, the less polar it is.
Question 3: Based on the TLC analysis shown in the video, which of the reference compounds (acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, or ibuprofen) is the most polar? Which is the least polar? Explain your reasoning.
Answer: The most polar was caffeine because it barely moved up compared to the others and the least polar was ibuprofen because it moved the furthest up the TLC
