White Privilege
Peggy MacIntosh mentions a quote relates to the idea of white privilege:”I was taught see racism only in individual act of meanness, not in invisible system of conferring dominance on my group”. It explains that as a white, MacIntosh that when she sees or experiences something relates to the racism or something, she will think about what happen to her not what happen to her group of race. Therefore, it is not about being in a group of white race, but it is about being herself born as a white. She states some conditions pointing about white privilege. She says “I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not followed or harassed.” It shows that as an individual white, she doesn’t have to worry because there is nothing will happen to her because she is a white. She has been taught that as a white, she has something called as ‘superiority’. Nothing will happen to her because she is a white because if she gets attacked, for sure, she is not the wrong one and there is something wrong with the others. …show more content…
The statement here can be compared with the next condition “I can be casual about whether or not to listen to another person’s voice in a group which she is the only member of my race”. Once again, it shows that she, as a white, has superiority making her to be confidence as a white because no one will underestimate her. However, the phrase ‘in a group in which I am the only member of my race” explains that a white as an individual not a group will be alright though she is alone because she already has been taught her privilege as a white.
