White Privilege In Lacrosse: Case Study

The concept of social injustice I will be covering is the concept of privilege and how my understanding has changed. Privilege can be defined as having a special right or advantage granted to a particular person or group. One example of this privilege that was mentioned in the book was white privilege. White privilege is the idea that people with white people have unspoken special advantages over black people (Johnson, 2018). These advantages can range from anything such as acquiring jobs to even how often one gets pulled over by the police while driving. Another term that Johnson mentioned in the book was DWB, or “Driving While Black.” This refers how there have been black people who have been pulled over for no actual reason other than the …show more content…
I had only heard of this topic slightly before and never really did any research on the topic but this was talked about in class and in the book quite a bit in this semester. At first I was not one that really thought it was a thing that really existed. As the semester has gone along, I can see that it may actually exist. I have grown up in an away that is almost 100% white so it has really been tough for me to see whether or not this is real. Even living in LaCrosse for two years still has not really exposed me to a situation that is too different. LaCrosse is still primarily white when it comes to the population. The only way I would be able to see if white privilege exists would be live in an area where the population in more diverse. I think that cultural diversity can be very helpful to solving the problem of certain ethnicities having privileges. Bringing a variety of cultures and ethnic groups could help those groups build bonds and better relationships. Those bonds and relationships could help solve this problem as they could come together and help solve issues and maybe end up in seeing them more as equals. This could happen by the possibility of sharing ideas and experiences with each which could eliminate the possible bridge between ethnic groups of there is one. I do no personally have any major first-hand experience with cultural diversity as everywhere I have lived in my life has not had much cultural diversity. LaCrosse has provided some diversity but I wouldn’t say it has been enough to really consider it major diversity. LaCrosse still seems like it is primarily white in population. I have not really even traveled anywhere that also has had much diversity either so it is hard for me to give any extensive first-hand
