According to the case Whites Only: The KKK and Socially Directed Donation, Thomas Simons was assaulted in a $5 robbery in Manatee County Florida. He was struck in the head and sustained massive brain damage that destroyed his brain function. His family was approached about donating his organs. The family was willing to do so but with a restriction. Simon was a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. Knowing his beliefs, his father agreed to donate “to white recipients only”. The organ procurement organization tried to persuade the family to make an unrestricted donation. The procurement team understood that these organs such as a heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, and kidneys could be procured and that were in a relatively young man who was healthy before the assault could potentially save the lives of several people on the waiting list. It would not be fair to strictly give the organs to whites only based on Thomas beliefs because what if an African American really needed an organ, was a match, and was in desperate need why not do a good deed? If the family had placed a restriction that organs were to go to children first I could agree with that restriction. Children should be the first priority in certain circumstances. If and only if the child could survive longer and an adult really needed the organ, I would say give it to the adult all depending on the situation.
Keep your promises could be a moral rule to permit this restriction due to the father respecting his beliefs. This case would fall under the principle of equality. Equality requires that benefits and risks be distributed justly among all participants. Yes, it is better to save some lives but not under discriminatory. Saving some lives should not be based on race no matter the circumstances because any person in their right mind should want to save anyones life if they have a good heart and
