Next on the list is characterization, the main character Despereaux is a small adventurous mouse who goes through a lot of trouble trying to help the princess. Is mother is a french vain mouse who really cares more about her beauty than her actually son. While his brothers pick on him for being the smallest. The style of the book is very simple with elegant drawings that shoe key events in the story that might make it easier for readers to read. The images that the illustrator used to create a visual storytelling effect is that at the bottom of each image, he used a direct quote that the image was to be of. Also I thin using black and white helped show the readers a glimpse of perhaps how an mouse can only see in black and white perhaps. It could also play on the fact the the story characters are really light and dark in a sense. Either they help or are against Despereaux. A published review from Kirkus reviewed the book as, “A true Renaissance mouse, he can hear honey, read words, and appreciate fine music”
