Edith Wharton wrote a story entitled Ethan Frome, which tells the story of two characters who fell in love. The book starts out in the point of view of the narrator, an engineer, living in Massachusetts. The narrator becomes curious upon seeing a man who appears unapproachable. The townspeople tell the narrator that the man is Mr. Frome, but they do not go in to any more detail. The narrator becomes suspicious of Ethan and his background. The story then shifts to a third person point of view so the reader can meet a young Ethan Frome. Readers get an introduction to Ethan’s love interest, Mattie, in chapter 1. It is this love interest that ends up leading Frome to his tragic flaw and solidifies him as a modern tragic hero.
