Very few of Matthias’ work survived but he is well known for his masterpiece, “The Isenheim Altarpiece”, 1515. The structure stands 9’ 91/2 x 10’ 9” and opens to reveal different scenes at The Unterlinden Museum, Colmar, France. He originally painted this for the monks of the Monastery of St. Anthony. This painting has 3 different scenes painted with oil on wood. The first state displays the crucifixion of Jesus. The predella is painted with a Lamentation of Christ. The second state is centered on Mary and Jesus as an infant. The
