Even those who you may not care for but are forced to deal with can hurt you both physically and emotionally leaving you permanently wounded. Nieve, the main character is forced to live with her father because of a court settlement . She is beat by her father and so she tries to reason why she is beat by him to herself. Some would say that when people are forced into difficult positions they get stronger because of it. The thing is that only a few can come back stronger from terrible experiences like the one nieve went through, most would be left broken and cynical. Nieve was left behind by those she loved such as her romantic interest and abused by people who should have protected her, such as her father. When analyzed a reader could see that the main character was abused and abandoned since she was very young and had been changing because of it. She saw life the way very few would because of the darkness she had experienced. Aguerra was able to portray the theme to her readers with the vivid telling of nieve's life and how she changed throughout the story because of all the suffering she went through. Those who are closest to someone can be the ones that hurt them the most, so how can anyone really trust
