A significant character in this play was Reverend Parris. His main motivation was not to please God but to please the townspeople and his congregation. The author helps develop this character by showing where his position in the town stands and it does not stand with God as much as it stands with his name. Parris wants to seem like a true man of God who stands by the Bible in every way. The author helps bring out his true character by showing how his daughter was unconscious and instead of being worried about her he was worried about his reputation and about word getting out to the people about there being witchcraft in his own home.
