A human sees the world through their own lenses, and through this lens they interpret the world. People develop their own concepts and ideas based on their interpretation of the world. Because of different views, people form different ideas, believing that their’s is the right one. Most humans tend to take pride in their ideas and the knowledge they have. For this reason, it is hard to put aside personal ideas and concepts and listen to other’s ideas.
Thomas Szasz states in the first part of his quote, “Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem”. Szasz is referring to the pride a person has in themselves. Believing that every idea of theirs is exactly right. For a person to admit that what they thought was factual or true is wrong, would hurt their pride and in essence injure self-esteem.
To be able to truly learn, a person must humble themselves to the knowledge of another. They must put aside their pride and be willing to have an open mind. A person must remove their bias opinion, and be able to non-subjectively

They are not afraid of seeming ignorant or uneducated, they just have a passion to learn. Where as an adult has already fully formed their believes and are not willing to subject them to others' opinions. An older person is supposed to have more knowledge and wisdom them those whom are younger. An older person not understanding something or having to ask for help from others would make them appear inadequate or ignorant. Most adults are not willing to expose their short comings, and therefore, are to prideful to actually learn from
