When Theodore Roethke wrote “My Papa’s Waltz” he wrote a poem filled with emotion and cognition. He was able to write a story that grabs the reader's attention and does so till the very end. Throughout the story, readers are able to analyze the relationship between the boy and his father from everything that happens during the waltz. In the short poem “My Papa’s Waltz” the son had a negative experience because of all the cynical actions he endured from his father. From the very beginning of the short poem, it is apparent almost right away as to why the son is going to have such a bad experience with his father. Theodore Roethke makes the readers aware that the root of the sons bad experiences with his papa was because of the father's drinking.
