Who Is To Blame For General Lee's Death

Military battles have been fought for many, many years. People leading in the battle have been both amazing leaders but also have been weak leaders. July 1, 2, 3 in the year 1863, the south was led by Robert E. Lee in the 3 day battle of Gettysburg. Even though a number of commanders made their mistakes during this battle, I still believe General Lee was to blame for the Confederates loss at the Battle of Gettysburg. Many people believe that there was not only one person to blame for the loss of the Confederates at Gettysburg. General Lee was the head of the South giving all the orders. He was a great leader but also made multiple mistakes, causing the Confederate army to lose. General Lee did not want to listen to his men and take advice from his head commanders. In the book Killer Angels, it states, “Longstreet shrugged. He had disagreed last night, had argued all morning, but now he was setting his mind to it. Yes, the attack …show more content…
The problem with general Lee was that he didn’t have any confidence in the war. In the passage by Fan, it states, “...Lee’s first mistake was not insisting on maintaining the fight, and allowing the Union Army to occupy those heights”(Fan). Another way we see General Lee showing no confidence was in the book Killer Angels where is says. “Now all we have to do is swing round between him and washington and get behind some nice thick rocks and make him come to us, and we’ve got him in the open”(Shaara). A third reason Lee had no confidence was in the movie Gettysburg when General Lee is talking to Kemper and then many soldiers come up to his horse. He apologizes for the attack and say it is entirely his fault (Gettysburg). These are showing how Lee didn’t have any confidence in himself or the army. Because Lee didn’t have confidence in the south, this really hurt the army because Lee gave orders he probably shouldn’t
