There was nothing unusual about how Dr. Hodel grew up. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 10, 1907. His mother and father were together and he was their only child. Hodel first came into the officials’ eyes when his secretary, Ruth Spaulding, unexpectedly died of a drug overdose. Many people thought that he made her do it because he was involved in many financial frauds, for example, making patients pay for treatments that they did not have. He used her overdose as a way to cover up his frauds. He was never convicted for the death of Ruth. In 1947, an aspiring actress, by the name of Elizabeth Short. She went on a trip, six days after she returned, her remains were found in a vacant lot close to Dr. Hodel’s practice. This is still one of the biggest cases that the LAPD ever had to deal with. There was originally over 150 suspects for the case. Everyone was interviewed and they cut the number down to only 25 suspects, which included Dr. Hodel.
