The foil of a character can loosely be defined as a complement or near complete opposite, a foil serves to further the understanding of the main protagonist as well as offer a deeper meaning to the story as a whole. The main protagonist of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein, has a counterpart who is clearly represented by his opposing attitude towards life in the final volume and is best suited due to his role as Victor's childhood friend. Not only does Henry Clerval act as a contrast to Victor's emotion but he also emphasizes it, through his death the reader is provided with the opportunity to truly comprehend how horrible Victor's life has become after the creation of his monster.
