In my opinion, the most disturbing situations in his short stories come from Emily Grierson. She is probably one of the most flawed characters, and this is especially portrayed when Faulkner writes, “What was left of him, rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed”(59). He also writes that a “ long strand of iron-gray hair”(59) was left behind on the pillow. This depicts that Emily Grierson let the body decay in her own house for a long time. It could also be interpreted that Emily was having sexual attractions to a dead man. This depiction of the character in this story completely portrays Faulkner's style of using the most strange, disturbing characters.
