DBQ: North or South: Who killed Reconstruction?
Reconstruction died because of Southern resistance and Northern aggression. The Reconstruction was a point in time where freedom of former slaves began to rapidly increase and former slaves now had freedoms such as being able to vote. There are those who would argue that the South killed reconstruction because of the terror the inflicted on Freedmen, Scalawags and carpetbaggers by threatening, Whipping or even killing them and placing the dead body for all to see. However the main cause was North because they removed troops Under the compromise of 1877, they changed their focus to the economic panic regarding the political corruption in the Grant administration, and they had racist views toward the African Americans.
There are those who say that the south was the main cause of death of the Reconstruction because of the KKK attacks on the Freedmen, Scalawags and carpetbaggers, and the South dedication to destroy the idea of reconstruction. By removing the troops the KKK was able to come out of hiding and openly threaten the people who supported the Reconstruction. Therefore they were able to inflict more terror among the Carpetbaggers, scalawags and Freedmen. Another reason the North is responsible for the death of reconstruction was because they removed the freedmen's rights to become a political figure. This not only gave the south hope, but also went against the rights they just gave to the former slaves. In Document D the North portrayed former slaves as not smart as white people and unfit to be a political figure. This went against the reconstruction because it was about equality and equal rights but in this picture it showed that they were inferior to white
