Why Are Ethnic Minorities Being Underrepresented In Elite Universities?

In recent years’ studies have shown that there are more students from ethnic minority backgrounds enrolling in university contrasted to white British students in the UK. Research from the IFS (Institute for Fiscal Studies) showed that the majority of ethnic groups are “more than twice as likely to go to university as their White British counterparts” . If this is the case the obvious question is why are black students and other ethnic minorities being underrepresented in the UK’s most elite universities?
In an article she wrote for the Guardian, sociologist Vikki Boliver’s research stated that Oxford University in 2013 “offered places to just 17% of its ethnic minority applicants compared to 25% of white applicants” and only 23% of students from a black background were accepted into a Russell Group universities opposed to 55% of white applicants that were offered a placement at these elite universities. Russell Group are a collective of more than 20 universities that are recognised to be the higher tier of universities, therefore it is more difficult to enter these institutions than others. This research shows that there are clearly barriers on the type of student allowed to enrol at these elite institutions, and that they are very selective on whom is allowed to enter the university.

All this will do is increase the gap between the profiling of white students to other ethnic minorities in these universities, which does not benefit the country for example black students from other countries who would view the percentage of black people actually offered a space to not even bother submitting an
