Social media today has become primal in our lifetime, and numerous colleges are starting to look at social media profiles of applicants. Using social media as a reference for an applicant has become widely used around the country. There are many quality reasons for colleges to look at social media profiles but there are also some reasons they shouldn’t look at social media profiles. It also shows that social media accounts can have positives and negatives for the applicants application. In the article, “They Loved Your GPA Then They Saw Your Tweets,” Natasha Singer, author for the New York Times talked about colleges using social media, “31 percent said they had visited an applicant’s Facebook or other personal social media page to learn more about them-a-five-percentage point increase from last year.”(Singer). This quote is saying to learn more about the applicant, five percent more of schools used social media’s. This shows that more people/schools are starting to use social media accounts as references or more background information. This can also exhibit that people have bad habits or bad things they do. Colleges can examine what those people are doing and checking out to see whether they they want those people with those behaviors/habits going to their school. Having inappropriate or swingeing pictures or videos on your social media accounts can affect what the colleges think about you and the likelihood of you getting into their college. Two reasons are that they might find the right account but the assumptions made by admissions officers may be biased or unfair and, one mistake/moment of bad judgement doesn’t speak for the whole person. U.S News and World Report, a news article company in, “Employers may misjudge job applicants based on Facebook pages,” said, “companies may be looking at the wrong things when using Facebook to screen job applicants and, as a result, could be overlooking people who would be good employees.” This quote is saying that companies may be looking at the wrong things while assessing an applicant's social media profiles. They may be so focused on looking at their bad traits that they forget about the traits they are looking for, and this may cause the colleges to miss out on good employees. Maybe the companies are making unfair or biased decisions, but what if they see something on your social media profiles they don’t want to see. They're not going to overlook it, ther’ye going to use it against you.
