George was born February 22, 1732. He was born on his father’s plantation. He would not stay in one place for too long. He was always on the run, so to speak.3 years after his birth, he was moved to Mount Vernon which was up the Potomac river. Not too long after, though they moved to Ferry farm instead. In 1775, Washington was commissioned to besiege the British in Boston. He thought this would be a relatively short battle. He said that he would be home by fall to Martha. He was very wrong. This battle raged on for an astonishing 8 years! Washington was experienced in frontier warfare, but he did not have experience in large formations! Instead of reading on it, he did not time, he learned how to do this while he was on the job. During the battle, he needed to defend New York. It was an island city so it was impossible to defend. The British was good at going on the water. After all, Columbus made it so, they were pretty good. Instead of trying to take back New York, he kept the British bottled up in New York. The British won so many times that Washington was getting desperate. Then Washington did one of the things we know best. He crossed the Delaware on Christmas. It was a freezing night, but he won. After the battle of Yorktown, 2 years passed until a peace treaty was reached, but this amazed the world. A lesser army had won against the British who seemed to have the advantage in every possible way. What allowed Washington to win was his flexibility. On Dec. 23, 1783, Washington resigned his
