The obstacles blacks had to face is segregation during that time. Union officers believed that blacks were not as skilled or brave as the whites. They just thought that the blacks can just be cooks, carpenters and etc.. Black soldiers were in big danger if they were captured in the battle. According to History.com the blacks were paid $3 less than the whites during the war.
According to History.com When Shaw got shot they buried his body with the black soldiers that were also killed in the battle. Also shaw´s parents were happy that he was buried with the black soldiers. The reason the parents felt that way is because they felt that the soldiers were brave and dedicated towards the battle. So it made everybody have a different look towards the blacks and made the blacks became heroes of this battle.
