General Ulysses S. Grant's victories at forts Donelson and Henry on both the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, proved to be critical to the Union's success in the war. The great display of force helped pull Kentucky further into the folds of the Union. The victories also opened the gates to the strategically important region of Tennessee, as well as to Georgia, and the very heart of Dixie. Ulysses S. Grant was eventually given control over the force of Union troops that was to attack Vicksburg, and led them to victory, leading one of the most well fought military campaigns of the entire war. Thanks to his actions the Mississippi river was now in the hands of the Union. This was a crippling blow to the Confederacy.
