Why Do College Athletes Get Paid

College athletes. From basketball, softball, lacrosse to football and gymnastics. These young athletes work tirelessly to perfect themselves and to be the best that they can be. College athletes should get paid because they aren't allowed to get jobs, despite having a scholarship, if an injury the scholarship stops, and lastly they are being exploited to earn the college money. Another idea that says paying college athletes is a good thing, is that “full-ride” scholarships given to athletes don't actually cover all their college expenses. Many athletes still aren’t able afford to have their parents come to the events and watch their child. For example, in 2010, “Duke basketball players were valued at $1,025,656 while the players were living just $732 above the poverty line and a scholarship shortfall of $1,995” (“The Price of Poverty in Big Time College Sports”). With all of the achievements these athletes receive, no one noticed that a lot of the players live very close to poverty. Due to this lack of money, black-market deals are created. Here, representatives that represent the any college give players’ anything they really want, and in return, these players go to their college and play the sport in which they are part of. They happen to almost every player. For instance, Jalen Sears here at school got injured his first game. had this been a college game his scholarship would have been expired. Due to the fact that he was injured, he couldn't play, thus that is why his scholarship would be void and done. With his scholarship done Jalen, and any other athlete that had an injury would have to start paying like any other student walking into that school. With any athlete that gets a scholarship should get a free ride. That is the point of a scholarship, to get a free ride to college and not have to worry about pay.
