Psychologists recognize depression as a serious mental health issue among men and women. It can have a great impact on one’s life. Depression is an illness that affects people world-wide. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated three hundred and fifty million people are affected by depression (WHO, 2015). Psychologists argue that depression affects women and men differently even though they may experience similar signs and symptoms (Nierenberg 2014). Furthermore, women are more likely to experience depression than men and men are more likely to commit suicide when suffering from depression. (Cochran & Rabinowitz 2003). Depression in women are influenced by many different factors. For instance, women are more prone to experience depression due to the fluctuation in hormone levels during child bearing years. The fluctuation of hormone levels cause an imbalance in one’s emotions, which leads to women to experiencing symptoms of depression (Rosch 2014). Also, women have a greater chance of being depressed because they have a greater genetic predisposition for depression than men (Smith & Jaffe 2015). Furthermore, women tend to experience the symptoms of depression more often than men (Smith & Jaffe 2015). On the other hand, some psychologists argue that the depression rates in women surpass the depression rates in men because there are many unreported and undiagnosed cases of depression in men (Weller 2013).
