Something that affects this story is the man-made geography. On page 538:2 it states that the murderer would sneak into the victim’s bedroom gently enough to not wake him up. We see our rooms as a safe place not somewhere where you might feel threatened but some of us still close the closet door in fear that something will pop out to hurt us. You might want to check your closet tonight. On page 540:5, the murderer uses the bed as the instrument for the massacre. If the bed wouldn’t have been there the murderer would have used something else like a knife or any other weapon that could have made this seen louder or a little more gruesome. On page 538:3 it states that the murderer came in for exactly seven days waiting for the eight night in order to mark his move. This means that the murderer took special care planning to stalk his prey and watching his every move until he could find the perfect moment, on the eighth night. On page 540:5, it states that in an instant, the murderer had gotten his victim stuck under his bed. What this suggests is that the murderer had to lay open the lantern to let the light into the room, drag the old man to the floor and drop the old man’s bed over him, quick enough so that the old man wouldn’t create such a loud noise, which he didn’t he only shrieked once, only once. On page 539:1-3 the murderer stayed still for a whole hour just so the old man wouldn’t sense his presence. When the murderer accidentally opened up the lantern, this altered the old man, but he didn’t make a noise knowing that there was something watching straight across the pitch black darkness, death
