First of all, Adnan’s verdict shouldn’t have been life without parole because Jay changed parts of his story so that it would help the cops. The State can’t convict Adnan to life in prison without parole because they lack enough evidence to convict him. Forensic evidence would strengthen the State’s case, but they lacked it. Sarah mentions how she so focused on other aspects that she she didn’t realize,”But the other stuff they seized on was stuff I hadn’t paid much attention to at all: the forensic reports, or rather, the relative lack of forensic reports.” Sarah talks about how there wasn’t a lot of forensic reports on Adnan. This weakens the State’s case due to the State’s unability to provide forensic evidence such as DNA swabs that proved Adnan killed Hae. This is another reason why Adnan shouldn’t have deserved the harsh sentence he was given.
