Amanda Sakuma from MSNBC, took part in the attack in her article “Why Donald Trump’s racist remarks matter”. In the article, she claims that Trump’s statements are not accurate. In fact she suggests that with very little fact checking you will see that his words are “both out of touch and inflammatory”. Well yes, that would be a great conclusion (if there were any evidence or facts provided to support her statement). But Sakuma fails to provide any sort of evidence with the correlation between violent crime and illegal immigrants making her conclusion false and unsupported. She continues in the article jabing Trump at every turn she could find; relentlessly listing reasons why Trump should not be taken seriously. Not once does she take a logical explanation to any of her topics. Instead relying on emotion appeal and unsupported statements to help sell her narrative to the reader. Salon’s writer, David FitzGerald, also chimed in on the controversy. In his respectable and fact driven article titled, “This proves Donald Trump is lying: Here are the actual facts on immigrants and crime” his attempt to derail Trump is backed by a study done by the Pew Research Center in 2013. The study states that “immigrants were much less likely than the U.S.-born to have committed a crime in the last year”. So with that evidence Trump’s statements are refuted? Unfortunately they are not. In the study they are referring to immigrants that legally come to the United States and the criminal activity they are involved in, not illegal immigrants. The Salon uses this info to their advantage by mixing the legal immigrant crime statistics with that of the illegal, thus making the crime numbers for illegal immigrants significantly better.
