EQUALITY IN AMERICA
In recent news, America has made itself look as if everyone is not equal. According to the Declaration of Independence, “All men are created equally [and] are endowed by the creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The promise of the Declaration of Independence is that everyone has their own rights that no one can take away from them. These ideals that have been set out in the Declaration of Independence for America are very important in today’s world because if the people aren’t following any rights or laws that were made for them, America would be a complete chaos. As of June 26, 2015, gay marriage is now legal in all 50 states, according to “The Week That Changed the Nation” by Stephen Collinson. The article also states how President Barrack Obama flew to South Carolina for the funeral of Pastor Clementa Pinckney, who was one of the few people that had died in the Charleston Massacre. At the funeral, President Obama expressed his status as being the first African American president and mentioned that discrimination needs to be encountered. I disagree with Woods’ view that America is safer and that there isn’t a lot of crime because recent events have shown that there is still many serious incidents that have occurred. For example, in the book “Letter to My Son” the sixth paragraph thoroughly talks about incidents of police brutality. The paragraph also lists real incidents of the people who had died because of white officers. Even though America has decreased their crime rate, there are still many that are happening today. Especially with people who are supposed to be protecting
