Crooks is only lonely for one reason, he’s African American. On page 72 chapter 4 when Lennie is in Crooks room and Crooks was talking to Lennie about how George might not come back from town and saw him get mad he say, ”S'pose you didn’t have nobody. S'pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy cause you was black.” Crooks says he isn’t allowed in the bunkhouse and that’s the truth. The other guys don’t treat him the same because they think any African American is worth nothing. They see him as a useless nothing. Because Crooks isn’t allowed in the bunkhouse, he is all alone. In chapter 4 page 72 he tells Lennie, ”S’pose you had to sit out here an read books… Books ain’t no good. A guy needs someone - to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody… I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick.” Crooks has no one to talk to. He just has to do his work and then stay in his room.
