Ever since guns were invented in the thirteenth century, there has been debate over whether the powerful monsters should be contained and controlled, or if they should be given to citizens to protect themselves against harm. This controversial issue that has been in constant question since 1968, when the Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed which regulated the firearm industry and owners of firearms. Domestic violence usually occurs when one person in a relationship tries to claim superiority over the other, often through severe acts of violence. Cases of domestic violence that involve firearms become even more horrific. Margaret Price provides the statistic that “domestic assaults involving firearms are twelve times more likely to be fatal than those not involving firearms” (Price 79). Firearms were used to kill more than two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims between 1990 and 2005, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Also according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, abused women are five times more likely to be killed by the abuser if the abuser owns a firearm. Any situation that has anger or tension involved is already perilous, with a weapon of any kind, especially a gun, the seriousness of the situation intensifies drastically. If a gun is nearby, the angered individual is likely to grab hold of the weapon and fire out of rage. The 2nd Amendment states that citizens have the right to bear arms and that statement is widely recognized as the main reason to be opposed to gun control. Since the amendment was instilled in 1791, some people believe that the right to own and use guns should stay the same forever since the amendment was one of the first principles to govern the United States. Citizens do not yet understand that gun control does not necessarily imply removing guns from every household and closing shooting ranges. Gun control can be simply regulations applied to the purchase of firearms. Another commonly debated reason for not allowing gun control is that citizens feel safer knowing that they are permitted to use guns for defending themselves.
