In the novel, there are many scenarios of kids being bad influences. For instance, there are many parts throughout the storyline where high school students are misbehaving in and out of school. One example is that the high school students stole a car from their stern English teacher, Mr. Griffin. Also, Mark actually attempted to burn Susan to death in her own house as she was forcefully tied into a chair. All of these instances are very poor for young aged and immature children to read. An ideal example, is when Mark, Jeff, and Dolly, all forced Susan to be the bait in their scheme of what they did to Mr. Griffin. One direct quote from the novel is when Jeff thought, “In another minute she is going to be bawling. He’s got to suspect something.” This is when Susan realized she was being used by her “friends” after they kidnapped Mr. Griffin. She had to go to extra help with him and walk out to the car with him, so then the other kids could sneak up on Mr. Griffin and take hostage of him. Furthermore, another example of peer pressure is when Mark Kinney forces Betsy to drive the stolen car, even though she did not feel comfortable doing so. Peer pressure is a big topic and is one of the main points in this novel. That is once again another reason why Lois Duncan's novel should be age restricted.
