Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, launched many progressive reforms during his six-year term. President Johnson referred to his policies and programs as the “Great Society for all Americans.” His objectives were to help those in poverty. These programs had a huge impact on health, education, urban renewal, conservation, and civil rights. They still do today, and many of these programs are still in force. President Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, near Johnson City in Texas. He was the first of five children of Sam Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines Johnson. His father was a farmer, businessman, and state legislator; and his father’s involvement with politics most likely influenced his later involvement.
