The reason for this is because the human adult characters tended to engage in tedious diolque scenes. To eliminate this problem the show eventually decided to combine it’s reality and fantasy elements. Therefore characters like Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird became permanent street residents and would regularly interact with the multicultural human cast.
