Minimum Wage and Why It Is Important “[Eric Greitens] has rejected calls to veto the [minimum wage preemption] bill, meaning the minimum [wage in St. Louis] will drop from $10 an hour to the state wage of $7.70.“ (Chang, 2024) Minimum wage has been something often disputed between political parties, but when it comes down to it, raising the minimum wage will help the most people. The Republican Party tries to convince the public that this is not true, and that a minimum wage is bad for America, but this is false. Jobs could be encouraged to raise their wage to prevent people leaving for an easier job that has similar pay. The national minimum wage has been set at the same place for over 20 years, almost 25 now. Over that time, inflation has been able to accrue and slowly devalue the American dollar. On top of this, companies have been pushing for higher and higher prices, as they always are. At this rate, if a minimum wage hike is not implemented, America’s financial hole will just grow larger. “[The federal minimum wage] now stands at $7.25 an hour, worth roughly 40 percent less than in 1969.” (Appelbaum, 2021) The minimum wage has been the same for so long that inflation has actually lowered it’s worth by almost half. This goes to show just how outdated the minimum wage is, and how badly it needs to be updated. “ About 882,000 workers” (Characteristics of Minimum Wage Workers, 2022 : BLS Reports: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023).
