It can be difficult to understand natural selection without understanding evolution, natural selection is defined as “the process by which species adapt to their environment” (Futuyama). Essentially natural selection is the explanation for the difference in rates of survival and reproduction. Natural selection explains the cause of change in characteristics or environmental aspects allowing a greater survival or reproduction rate (Futuyama). As the amount of individuals in a population increases, they pass the beneficial genetic traits to their offspring. Natural selection helps explain why some genes are more dominant than others or why reproduction success exists. Natural selection is paramount to the other concepts because of its’ role in nature. Since the time Darwin came up with this theory, people have been attempting to study people and animals and any living creatures to find a more concrete understanding instead of this abstract theory that exists. Some of this research into the theory of natural selection has helped inspired many scientific discoveries. Because of natural selection, evolution was more easily understood and efficiently defined. Evolution served as the scope of explanation of evolvement in all forms of life. Natural selection has helped further scientific discovery, which has made it possible to understand the interaction between the human population and the
