He mistreated the “Indians” and was an avarice leader. Christopher Columbus recognized the natives abundance of hospitality and quickly took advantage of it. “When you ask them for something they have, they never say no”, Columbus wrote when discussing the Indians.
Another reason as to why Columbus day should not be celebrated as a holiday is the way he abused the Indians. He took them in harshly and made them slaves by taking control of their lives. Columbus demanded to know the location of gold and ordered around the Indians to help with the search. Zinn wrote, “ It led Columbus to take some of them aboard ship as prisoners because he insisted that they guide him to the source of gold.” Gold was a new symbol of wealth that people and countries desired, including Columbus. …show more content…
An example of his greed is when Christopher supposedly saw the first sign of land during his voyage. The person who first saw land was awarded 10,000 maravedis for life and Columbus was quick to take this gift. A sailor named Rodrigo claimed to have seen land first, but Christopher hastily stepped in and took the reward for himself. Zinn wrote, “ Christopher claimed he had seen a light the evening before. He got the reward.”
