WWI brought a lot of advancements to the warfare. By the time the conflict was over, submarines, tanks, aircraft-dropped bombs, poison gas, and machine guns had transformed the nature of modern warfare. No one would have ever expected a war or the duration and magnitude. Trench warfare was an advancement in WWI with low and close quarters it was dangerous for anyone in the trenches during this time. Lady Liberty is pale and has her hands over her eyes like she doesn't want to see what's going on. The German has a bloodied club with the word “kultur” on it meaning culture so that goes to show that the germans have a bloody culture and just want to kill and and take over anything in their way.
