Why We Should Have Dress Codes

A dress code is supposed to equalize the masses. All have to follow the rules and this is supposed to instill order, discipline and fairness. But often, this is not the case. Countless stories have surfaced about the strict rules students, and most often females, face in schools. This has allowed for more scrutiny of the female body and more ammo in societies arsenal to attack a girls self-esteem. Instead of teaching the young formative minds of tomorrow and building their confidence, these policies are tearing them down.

While no one wants to see clothes with profanity or students walking around in their birthday suits, changes need to be made. To teach students and young girls especially to be ashamed of their body and cover it at all costs, even if it means being uncomfortable, is unacceptable.
Tanks tops are at the center of this problem. Tank tops are often deemed as a distraction to others. But by others, it can be inferred to mean the boys. So girls are put into a confined box of rules and regulations to protect boys from being distracted. As a former high school student who has had many first had experiences with this problem, both personal and from friends, I feel I have a good reference on how the dress code actually effects students. Many of the high schools have old buildings with poor access to proper air-conditioning. The classrooms in the early and late school year can feel like a sauna. As you are sitting in class trying to pay attention all you can think about is how hot you are and if anyone can see you sweating. That is distracting, not someone’s
