Child labor has such a negative connotation and in many cases this connotation is true, however, there are also instances where children are part of the labor force due to helping their parents. The reality is that “hazardous work by children is often treated as a proxy category for the Worst Forms of Child Labour” (Diallo et al., 2010, p.10). hazardous work is an extreme form of child labor, but not all child labor falls under this category. The essay question falls along with how I answered part of the discussion post for this week. To elaborate, “their efforts may enable younger brothers or sisters to go to school, they may be working to pay off family debts, or they feel part of a more adult world, as working provides access to commodities that signify adult status” (Morrow, 2010, p. 438). By a child doing their part to provide an income for their family, they are able to improve the overall quality of life for the family. Child labor is not always due to force, sometimes children do it because they want a job and it is a positive experience for them rather than a negative experience that is depicted in the media so often.
