The Cooperative Commonwealth Federation was founded in 1932, in Winnipeg by a group of MPs to support farmers and labor groups. The party was led by J.S. Woodsworth and believed in democratic socialism, rather than capitalism and communism. They blamed the depression on the capitalist system and proposed a number of socialist policies to ensure public ownership of major industries such as banks, public utilities, and transportation companies. It was founded by William Aberhart a popular radio show host who originally pushed the provincial government to give every adult in Alberta a social dividend of $25. He believed that by giving citizens $25 they will spend this money to buy goods and the increase in demand will cause an increase in production, in turn, more workers will be needed, and the unemployment rate will decrease. Unfortunately, he failed to convince the government, so in 1935 he formed his own party called the Social Credit Party. During the 1935 election, they attracted voters from the United Farmers Movement and the Progressive Party of Canada, winning 56 of the 63 seats. They became the first social credit government in the world. Once in government, he realized the government did not have enough money to give every citizen $25 so he decided to print more money.
