Romanticism can be described as the opposite of the Classicism – it abandoned the ideas of peaceful environment and focused more on the mysterious and peculiar events. The main ideas of this period were the beauty of nature, individuality and people’s personality. Moreover, there was a growing interest in the medieval ages which also had an impact on the art ("Romanticism | Encyclopædia Britannica”).
Three of the most popular painters in the Romantic Period were William Blake, Francisco Goya and Thomas Cole.
Born in 1757, William Blake was a British painter and writer who is known for his love of Gothic art and his ways of interpreting it in his own works. Throughout his life, his style of painting changed from cheerful to gloomy (Voorhies). His paintings were a way for him to express criticism for his era’s political problems. Goya’s paintings included “The Third of May” and the series “Los Caprichos” (Biography.com Editors).
Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was the founder of the Hudson River School – American painters of landscapes. He traveled a lot and was discovered and accepted into New York’s cultural community. Some of his best works were “The Mountain Ford” and “Shipwreck”
