William Carlos Williams’s book of poetry The Wedge is prefaced by an introduction that introduces his readers to his controversial ideas concerning poetry and what it should represent. Unlike most poets of his day Williams thought that poetry should not be phantasy and rather should be focused on the real world. What he means by this is that poetry is not some form of escapism. That poetry much like math and science is a fundamental aspect of life. And much like math and or science poetry is a complex and huge machine where every piece is necessary for success.
