I am 40 years old and I am an advisor to Kaiser William II of Germany. If anyone were to find my journal, discard it, as I unmask the reasons why William II and his Weltpolitik led to World War I. I try to advise him in person but he will not listen. If he could listen, I would tell him that his biggest problems were unnecessary meddling and his system of alliances.
I believe William II had good intentions. As any leader, he was trying to build his empire to be the most successful in the world. However, he went about it the wrong way. William II asked France and Russia to join his alliance in hopes of pressuring Britain to join. France and Russia refused, so William II called the Boer president to support its independence, grossly upsetting Britain for getting involved in their imperial affairs. This weakened the relationship between Britain and Germany so much that Britain became inclined to increase their naval power as Germany tried to match theirs. With this, Britain thought that Germany was looking for military dominance which was going to threaten Britain security. Britain also thought the Germany was going to try to promote its interests around the world by foreign commerce, which is something that Britain excelled in at the time and did not want any competition. This then caused Britain to establish the Two Power Standard. This means that Britain was going to be built to be as strong as the next two great naval powers combined. Germany ignorantly thought Britain would be their only threat, as France, Russia and Britain had tension, but we were wrong.
