Willy Loman is a salesman. He was out of town for a business trip and arrived back home earlier than initially planned. He complains to his wife that multiple times the car drifted, and something is wrong with the steering wheel. He says that somehow he kept almost driving on the wrong side of the road. Linda,his wife, insists that the car must be checked out, and the steering wheel must be acting up again. Linda thinks at his age of seventy he shouldn’t be driving so far out anyhow. She asks if he can see if his boss can refer him to a closer office. Willy obliviously believes it a sure thing, and that even at his very old age he is a vital component of his job. Linda and Willy talk about how great of a salesman Willy was back in the day. They start to talk about their kids and Biff and Happy are introduced. Biff and Happy are Willy and Linda’s sons. While their son Happy still lives in the family’s hometown the other son Biff doesn’t. Biff returns to town from up west where he worked as a farmhand. Earlier that day Biff and his father get into an altercation. They get into a fight about Biff not reaching his potential in life. Willy then has a flashback about Biff when he was younger. He thinks about how Biff was captain of the football team, how everyone adored him, his socialite skills, and how he had 3 full ride scholarships to successful universities. It angers Willy because he feels him and his wife put so much into raising his boys and fears because of Biff’s career choice he may never get to retire. He goes to talk to his boss about a transfer to a closer office to home, but sadly he gets fired. He goes into such an intense sadness he starts to talk to imaginary people again while on the way to meet his sons at a restaurant. He immediately wants to hear some good news, but apparently the guy Biff and Happy were going to get a business loan from refused to see them because he claims he didn’t remember them. Biff didn’t know how to tell his father so it kinda just came out raw and truthful. Willy’s feels his last bit of joy has gone down the drain , and he refuses to believe it until it dwells on him. Willy stays sitting at the restaurant table wallowing because in his eyes now he had no way to support his wife and his future plans have now been pulled from up under his feet without warning. Willy goes into a despondent heavy-hearted state. His sons show no concern for their father because they are quite comfortable with their below average unfulfilling lives.
