Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory vs. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
Charlie has won the golden ticket! Based on Roald Dahl’s original novel; both movies illustrate a poor young boys once in a lifetime opportunity. He may now choose to tour through the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world, led by the most unusual man, Willy Wonka. In the original 1971 movie, directed by Mel Stuart, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is set in a small town in England. In the 1971 film, the “abduction” of Veruca Salt is a scene of ducks laying golden eggs, where as the 2005 film has squirrels searching for nuts. Another difference is the character known as Slugworth, or Wonka’s said to be “rival”. In the original film, Slugworth is found talking to each child right after they found their golden ticket. He offers them money in return for the secret recipe for the everlasting Gobstopper. However, in the 2005 film, Slugworth does not appear once. It is said that the biggest difference between Wonka and Charlie are the fact that Wonka was originally meant to be a musical. However, in Charlie only the Oompa-Loompa’s break into song. In the new film, there are also flashbacks that give the audience a better knowledge of the mysterious Willy Wonka and his past life. His father is a controlling dentist that denies Wonka any sort of candy because he had braces. Wonka ignores his father’s wishes and sneaks candy as often as possible. Although neither movies say, this could be exactly why Wonka started the factory in the first
