The author, Susannah Abbey, writes about Mankillers childhood. For example in lines 3-9, she says that Mankiller loves reading books as a child. This was the best thing her dad gave her (line 8-9). Unlike Abbey, the thing she does not talk about is her childhood. Although she briefly speaks of living with her grandfather on the Cherokee land, she did not elaborate anything important until she moved to San Francisco as a young adult. After moving to San Francisco she learned more about her people by joining the San francisco indian center (line 6-7). Some specific events that she shared was in lines 75-87. For example, leaders like Tom Porter and Joe Carrillo had impacted her life because of their tribal knowledge. For instance Makiller says Tom Porter “spoke movingly about the important role women play among his people” I think she included this because Mankiller was the first woman to be the cherokee chief and many people did not believe or want her to be chief because of that. She talked about was her encounter with Joe Carillo on page 94. Mankiller states that Joe Carrillo “encouraged California tribal people to reject a proposed settlement of all land claims for only pennies per acre.” she quoted there word because she thought it helped understand more about tribal peoples historical life and land treaties. I think this may have been the beginning of her leadership
