Benjamin Franklin once said, “I didn’t fail the test. I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.”
These words have really captured my life. A significant example was my first time at sleep away camp, and being diagnosed with ADHD, I couldn’t control my symptoms and ultimately got kicked out. I have done many things wrong in my life, but failing is not one of them.
Windsurfing is my personal metaphor. The board represents stability and the right mindset during school. This meant that I needed to stop playing mindless video games on the computer and PlayStation, and focus on my education. I already had the stability from the board, but now I needed something to steer my board in the right direction, the sail. There are many different sizes when it comes to sails. The smaller the sail, the harder it is to turn, the larger the sail, the easier it is to turn. I did start off with a small sail, which meant that I just started to realize how important school is and just started to “turn” my life around. As the size of my sail increased over the school years, so did my grades. I left my bad habits behind and started new ones. So instead of playing mindless video games with my peers as a break from studying, I went outside, worked out, and played sports. Without the wind, I would be unable to move forward, unable to make progress, and unable to achieve my goals in life. For me to make that turn in life, I needed the motivation to do so, the wind. My parents definitely motivated me to make that turn and start changing those grades from D’s to C’s to B’s, and to A’s.
