Wits End was a family owned school of arts owned by the talented, creative, Applewhite family. A young delinquent, named Jake, wreaked havoc among his old schools, he even set one on fire, and no other schools would accept him after his last expulsion until the Applewhite’s took him in. Jake Semple was your classic trouble maker, he had a Mohawk, piercings, and wore dark clothes with combat boots. He even smoked cigarettes, that boy was all about doing everything he shouldn't. The family school would later help change Jake for the better and help him learn that it is better to be good and do good. You should ready this book, because it has so much to offer. It has a variety of humor and personalities. With each personality there is something you can relate to and each one has a different way to make you laugh. The author uses great dialect to boost the mood and detail of the novel. The events are crazy and the least expected which make them interesting. This novel even is a Newberry Honor book.
Jake Semple was one of the main characters. He was emotionally corrupt, because his parents were in prison. He has been expelled from many schools and if he failed with the Applewhite’s he’d have to go to Juvenile Hall. E.D. is also a main character. She was named after Edith Wharton. She was the neatest and most organized out of her family. She previously conflicted with Jake, but later worked with him well on projects. Zedediah is the father of Randolph and Archie and the grandfather of the Applewhite children. He is the family patriarch. He works at his own woodshop, he and Archie make wooden furniture together. Henry Dugan is Jake’s grandfather, he wanted Jake to attend Wit’s End after he saw Lucille’s workshop. Cordelia is E.D.’s creative older sister who later developed a crush on Jake. Archie is a wood sculptor and is Randolph’s brother. Jeremy Bernstein is a journalist that stays with the Applewhite’s who records their artistic
