Musculoskeletal System in Elderly
Have you or a loved one suffered, or been diagnosed with arthritis? You’re not alone! Just in the United States alone there are over 40 Million people that are either at high risk due to their lower bone mass or they already have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis leaves your bones weak and brittle, making them more likely to fracture. Loss of height, chronic back pain, and changes in your posture are all results of Osteoporosis.
Being aged, having low sodium levels, and using alcohol excessively all increase your risk for the disease as we age. Osteoporosis is a very painful disease. It often effects our neck, lower back, knees, hips, and even the small joints that are in our hands. While there is no cure for this awful disease, it can be treated and prevented with medications. The Food and Drug Administration states that there are several different medications that are on the market to treat and help to prevent this horrible disease. ("Us Food and Drug Administration", 2010). Alternatives to medication would be to live a healthy lifestyle. Diets rich in calcium and vitamin D, along with regular exercise can prevent, even decrease the effects of osteoporosis.
Remember that you never have to suffer alone,
